A VERY successful fundraising night was held in Shearer's Bar on August 10  to help towards Football in the Community's appeal for cancer care.

Mick Lowes, from BBC Radio Newcastle, hosted the event and was quiz master for a 'Question of Sport' in which Shay Given, Steve Harper and Steven Taylor took on a team of United fans.

The event was very well attended and over £700 was raised on the night from a raffle (two signed shirts and a football from each player) and a blind auction.

The auction prize was a hospitality match day package for the forthcoming Manchester United game, kindly donated by Susan Justice from Brake Food Services.

The quiz was won by the players but it was a close run affair, the winning margin being two points.

With ticket sales to be added, the total raised will exceed £1,000.

Football in the Community spokesman George Shipley said: "I am very grateful to the players for making the evening a special one and to Susan Justice for again supporting our appeal.

"Brake Food Services have made a massive contribution to our fundraising so far this year, their support has been phenomenal."
