RICHARD Dinnis only had a short spell  in charge at St. James' Park, though he still managed to guide United into the UEFA Cup in his five months as manager.

Originally right-hand man to Gordon Lee, Dinnis was trainer/coach and helped lead the Magpies to the League Cup Final against Manchester City at Wembley in 1976.

When Lee departed Gallowgate, Dinnis was so highly thought of by the United players that they went as far as threatening to go on strike unless he was given the job.

When the dust settled Dinnis guided the club into the UEFA Cup for the 1977/78 season, but when United were knocked out of Europe by Bastia and bottom of the league after 10 straight defeats, he was ultimately replaced by Bill McGarry.

Dinnis still keeps a close eye on the Premiership, and watches Blackburn Rovers in his role as a local radio commentator.
