Charlie Mitten (1958-61)
CHARLIE made his name as a player with Manchester United, but after breezing into St. James' Park in 1958 he set about transforming the club.
Mitten replaced a directors' committee who had previously run team affairs, and while he changed everything from training to the team kit he never managed to get the backing from the boardroom.
Some directors liked him, others didn't and his frustration was summed up when he said: "Newcastle was unmanageable because of the boardroom intrigue".
The wranglings did not help the team as they struggled to perform, and he was eventually shown the door in 1961.
