MARTIN took over the hotseat immediately after the war, and one of his first decisions saw him allow Len Shackleton to make the move to Sunderland.

But he still managed to get the side promoted, even without Shackleton, and the likes of Jackie Milburn and Bobby Mitchell were all brought into the side during his reign.

He was lured away from Newcastle by Aston Villa before eventually returning to Luton Town, where he had played in the 1930s.
