MATCH ACTION
TURKISH midfielder Emre was the Geordies' game-changer as he came from the bench to score and set-up fellow sub Michael Owen for United's third as the Magpies ran-out 3-2 winners over Everton in a pulsating encounter at St.James' Park.
The black and whites went in at half-time a goal to the good after Nicky Butt found the much-coveted opener with a delightful curler three minutes before the break.
But that advantage was wiped out eight minutes after the restart, half-time introduction Andy Johnson converting from close range after good work by Leighton Baines down the left.
Emre and Owen emerged from the bench with 16 minutes left on the clock, and the Turk struck four minutes from time to put the Magpies ahead.
Everton could only half-clear Owen's looped cross and the former Inter ace was lurking 25 yards from goal to let fly with an absolute screamer which nestled beyond a despairing Tim Howard and into the bottom corner.
The 27-year-old then turned provider, his free-kick being headed home an unmarked Owen (90) for his third of the campaign.
The Georides were made to endure a nervy final couple of minutes as Mikel Arteta (92) saw his cross deflected in off Alan Smith but United hung on for a well-earned three points.
SECOND HALF ACTION (click refersh for latest)
It's full-time at Gallowgate with United 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Nicky Butt and substitutes Emre and Michael Owen.
90+2min - EVERTON GOAL (3-2): MIKEL ARTETA crosses from the right and the ball takes a wicked deflection off Alan Smith before looping over Shay Given and into the net. It's a lifeline for the visitors.
90+1min - Yakubu repalces Phil Neville.
90min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (3-1): Emre turns provider as an unmarked MICHAEL OWEN heads in the Turk's free-kick from eight yards out for his third of the season. St.James' is absolutely bouncing and Owen is mobbed by his United team-mates.
88min - Skipper Geremi is replaced by David Rozehnal.
86min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-1): Owen returns a ball into a crowded penalty area where Lescott heads away, the ball only goes as far as EMRE and he lets fly with an absolute screamer which nestles into the bottom corner of the Gallowgate End as St.James' Park erupts - 2-1 to the Geordies!
85min - Owen cuts inside Hibbert and shoots for the near post, Howard gets down to fist around the upright with the home crowd on their feet thinking it had gone in. Butt ghosts into to connect with Geremi's flag-kick but heads over from just six yards out.
80min - Emre bursts into the box at the other end and goes down under the challenge of Lescott but to be fair it's a hopeful shout for a pen and Atkinson waves away the appeals.
79min - Arteta switches the play from right to left and finds Anichebe in acres of space in the penalty area, the NIgerian takes a touch and takes aim for Given's goal but is thwarted by an excellent sliding challenge from Cacapa and Faye completes the clearance.
78min - Emre slips the ball into Owen in space 25 yards from goal and he spins before spreading the play to Geremi, Owen looks for the return surging into the area but the ball from the skipper is poor and Baines hacks away.
74min - Stephen Pienaar makes way for Leon Osman. Emre replaces Milner with Michael Owen coming on for Oba Martins for United.
71min - N'Zogbia does well to get away from a crowd of Everton bodies before being scythed down by Neville for which the skipper escapes punishment. United make a mess of the free-kick and the Toffees are able to clear.
69min - Hibbert is next in the book for a rash tackle on N'Zogbia on the left-wing. Geremi delivers and the ball skids off the head of Anichebe and runs away for a corner on the right. N'Zogbia takes but the ball evades everyone inside the area and drifts out for a goal-kick.
65min - Yobo barges the back of Smith midway inside the Everton half and Atkinson awards United a free-kick. N'Zogbia drives into the wall before Neville clears.
61min - Arteta hangs up the resulting free-kick at the far post where Beye and Faye combine to clear for a throw-in. The throw is long and Milner is back helping out at the back to head away.
60min - Smith gets a yellow card and a one-match suspension despite clearly winning the ball from Lescott with a sliding challenge.
58min - The visitors are enjoying a spell of pressure and Arteta's deep corner is headed back across the area by Lescott at the far post, Arteta retrieves but screws a right-footed shot into Shay Given's side-netting.
56min - Smith has possession inside the area after a pass from Milner, the England man has little options and rolls the ball back out for Enrique on the left, the Spaniard's cross is wasteful as he drills into the Gallowgate End much to the annoyance of the home crowd.
53min - EVERTON GOAL (1-1): Anichebe rolls the ball in-behind Beye on the right for the over-lapping Baines to run onto, the full-back carries the ball into the area and chips into the six-yard box where sub ANDY JOHNSON is waiting to convert from close range.
51min - Oba Martins receives treatment after a nasty clash of heads with Yobo.
The Geordies get the second period underway with James McFadden having made way for Andy Johnson at half-time.
FIRST HALF ACTION
It's half-time at St.James' with United going in a goal to the good at the break thanks to Nicky Butt's 42nd minute strike.
45+1min - Enrique clips a ball down the left flank for Martins to chase, the Nigerian keeps the ball in play and surges into the penalty area before cutting back for Alan Smith, there are too many bodies between Smith and the goal and he lays back to Milner who decides to have a crack from 25 yards out - it's a difficult one for Howard given the conditions but he stoops low to save at his near post.
42min - NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-0): N'Zogbia slips it wide to Smith and he pulls back across goal, Lescott can only half hack the ball clear and NICKY BUTT gets there ahead of former Man Utd team-mate Phil Neville before curling a beautiful right-footed effort into the top corner and beyond a despairing Tim Howard to give the Geordies a deserved lead.
39min - Enrique crosses from the left and Martins controls on the penalty spot, the Nigerian takes a touch before rolling back into the path of Smith who side-foots towards Howard's far corner, Lescott is the Toffees' saviour as his out-stretched leg diverts the goalbound shot around the post. N'Zogbia corner is cleared but Milner is quick to switch play back to the Frenchman on the right, he cuts inside Baines and delivers a whipped ball right into the heart of the Everton area, Butt arrives but can't get his shot away and the ball runs through to Howard.
35min - Smith wins a free-kick midway inside the visitors half after Yobo tugs on his shirt. Geremi delivers a wicked set-piece which Carsley almost turns into his own net - the ball skidding just just inches wide of the woodwork for a corner. Geremi takes and Yobo heads cleat, Martins retrieves the loose ball but his cross is wayward and flies behind for a goal-kick. The Toffess quickly break upfield and McFadden tries to slip in the Pienaar who has run on from midfield - Given is brave to dive at the feet of the South African and Beye completes the clearance.
32min - An excellent United move sees Enrique feed Milner on the left, the young winger twists inside and outside of Tony Hibbert and gets by the Everton full-back inside the area, Milner drives to the by-line and tries to pull-back for a queue of Magpies bodies inside the area but Yobo reads the situation and forces a corner from Milner's cross. Faye is punished for a push on Lescott from the flag-kick.
27min - Faye manhandles Anichebe as the Nigerian tried to get on the end of Arteta's clip forward and Everton have a free-kick in a dangerous position on the right. The Spaniard takes but Milner is able to clear for the Geordies at the far post.
23min - Butt is late on Pienaar and it's one too many fouls for the United midfielder and he enters Martin Atkinson's book.
21min - Smith and Martins are causing all sorts of problems for the Everton rearguard and again they combine to work an opening for Martins, the Nigerian skips inside Yobo's challenge on the edge of the area but drags his left-footed strike wide of Howard's upright - it's an encouraging start for the Magpies.
18min - McFadden tries to wrap his foot around a left-footed effort 20 yards out but can't enough curl on it and fires wide.
17min - It's not long before the hosts are back on the attack as they really begin to extert their authority, this time N'Zogbia slips the ball into Martins' feet inside the area and he works a yard before firing low at goal - Howard is equal to it again however and gathers low at his near post.
15min - Smith does well to win in the air and nods down for strike partner Martins, he slips it left to N'Zogbia who gets away his shot without having to go by Hibbert, the ball skips up off the wet surface and Howard has to be at full-stretch to palm behind with the ball destined for the bottom corner. The Frenchman's flag-kick is disappointing and Carsley is able to volley away at the near post.
12min - Hibbert hoists a high ball into the area and Anichebe challenges in the air with Given, the Nigerian forward does enough to get above Given's fist and his header bounces goalwards, luckily for United Faye has read the situation and gets back to hack clear.
7min - Neville capitalises upon the loose ball as Enrique challenges Arteta on the by-line, the goal opens up for the Everton skipper but Beye gets in the way of his left-foot strike to head behind for a corner. Arteta's flag-kick drifts out of play for a goal kick.
4min - Smith slips an excellent first-time ball through for Martins to run onto and the Nigerian is clean through, Lescott is chasing him down but Martins gets his shot away, however the Toon No.9 scuffs his left-footed effort and the ball draws wide of Howard's far post - it was a real chance and United should be in front.
2min - Smith is tugged back by Arteta having spun the Spaniard midway inside Everton's half. Geremi takes inswinging but Carsley is there to first to head behind for a corner. The Everton midfielder repeats the trick from the flag-kick and it's another corner. This time United are penalised for pushing in the area and the visitors have a free-kick.
Everton get the game underway attacking the Gallowgate End with a light drizzle falling at St.James'.
