NUWFC made history when they sealed a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup following a 3 - 1 home win against Northampton Town.

Newcastle dominated the first half of the cup tie, and did well to create chances early on as Northampton stood strong in their defence.

The opener came on 37 minutes when Michaela Newton hit a left foot strike to put the home side a deserved goal up.

Newcastle continued to push forward and on 43 minutes, Captain Sarah Renton fed a superb ball through to Newton for her to send a right foot strike into the top of the net and for the home side to be two nil up at the half time.

Northampton Town came back fighting in the second half, and showed they were not prepared to give up their place in the competition.

They were more confident on the ball and began creating more chances to put pressure on the united defence. This was rewarded when some sloppy defending from a corner allowed the ball to sneak into the home side's net and Northampton were back in the game.

But United kept their heads up and regained their concentration to maintain their lead. Jo Cartwright and Jemma Parr worked hard in defence and put in some well timed tackles to hinder Northampton attacks.

A further Newcastle attack allowed Sarah Renton to take the ball well through midfield and was challenged with an extremely late tackle to be sent tumbling to the ground. This was Scott's cue to step up to take the free kick and sent the ball rocketing past the keeper and seal a 3 - 1 win for the Newcastle.
