Toon Claw Back Point Against Wolves
Newcastle United WFC managed to collect a valuable point at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Wheatsheaf Ground.
Postponed games over the past month looked to have taken its toll on both teams as they struggled to get any sort of consistency in their play..
Newcastle's opening chance came early on for Michaela Newton when she took the ball past two Wolves defenders, but sending her chip over keeper Natalie Hall wide of the mark.
Wolves didn't have many more chances, but Becky Hall managed to score her shot on goal after some sloppy defending from United on 28 minutes.
Just before half time Jo Cartwright timed her tackle to perfection to prevent a further Wolves attack, and Emma McEnaney pulled off some good saves to keep the home side in the game.
Newcastle came out in the second half the better team and dominated the game, Stacy Crooks and Sarah Renton showing some good interchange play in midfield. Lindsay McCubbin was a constant threat to the visitor's defence creating numerous chances from set plays.
Ruth Sutcliffe had the chance to pull a goal back for Newcastle, showing some excellent individual skill to maintain possession, but the final shot was an easy save for the Wolves keeper.
With 72 minutes played Newcastle were back in the game when Naomi Robson struck the ball past Natalie Hall to score her 4th of the season and grab a point for United
Jamie Leigh Scott was extremely unlucky not to grab the winner for Newcastle when her free kick from outside the box was heading towards the top right corner. But a top class acrobatic save saw Hall manage to get a hand to the ball and put the shot wide of the post in the closing minutes.
Head Coach Rob Atkin said: "Overall we have to be pleased with the point because our first half performance was very poor and Wolves deserved to be in front at the break, the second half showed what we are capable of and we could have easily picked up the three points but for their keeper having an outstanding game. With us having such a young squad confidence is always going to play a massive part of our performances and getting back into the game the way we did just shows how far we have progressed over the season."
