GRAEME Souness rang the changes for the visit of FK ZTS Dubnica in the Intertoto Cup third round second leg at St. James' Park.

Shay Given returned in goal in place of Steve Harper, while Stephen Carr came back into the side at right back so Robbie Elliott dropped to the bench to allow Steven taylor to take over at centre half.

Lee Bowyer replaced Nicky Butt, and Michael Chopra was on the bench despite scoring in the first leg to allow Jermaine Jenas back into the side in a change of formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3.

Kieron Dyer, Shola Ameobi and Titus Bramble were all out injured, while new boys Scott Parker and Emre were left out and Hugo Viana wasn't in the squad.

Dubnica kept faith with the same side from the first leg, and were backed by a couple of dozen fans who had made the long trip for the game.

United got the game underway attacking the Leazes End, though the first few minutes were pretty tame as both sides trried to find their feet.

Jenas won a corner off Pleva on nine minutes on the united right, but N'Zogbia's near post cross was headed away by Kopacka.

Jenas had the first shot on goal after 11 minutes with a 20 yard drive from Milner's pull back that flew over the crossbar, then N'Zogbia's cross was nodded down by Bowyer into the path of Shearer but the skipper's effort flashed wide.

On 19 minutes Faye was dispossessed by Drzik, and when the ball ran loose to Adam his long range effort went wide.

Milner went close to opening the scoring when Bowyer threaded a pass through to Milner on 21 minutes, but his shot from 20 yards was tipped away by Pernis for a corner which came to nothing.

Milner then raced down the left to latch on a ball from Babayaro, but his cross was booted away by Kopacka and Novak headed the ball to the edge of the box. United immediately won a free kick 20 yards out for a foul on N'Zogbia. Jenas clipped the ball over the wall, and when his effort came back off the crossbar Faye headed over.

Jenas went close again with a header that was pushed out by Pernis, and Shearer was unable to turn the rebound in from an acute angle on 24 minutes.

Given made an easy save to smother a weak shot from Drzik on 35 minutes, then four minutes later Taylor got in a good sliding challenge to divert the ball off the toe of visiting skipper Zimen as he shaped to shoot.

There were no further opportunities as the half drew to a close, with United still enjoying a comfortable lead from the first leg.

At the start of the second period Souness made a change, with Michael Chopra replacing Jermaine Jenas and switching to a 4-4-2.

But the unfortunate Chopra was injured inside a minute after colliding with the goalkeeper challenging for a cross, and was stretchered from the field for treatment before returning to the action three minutes later.

On 58 minutes Chopra still didn't look comfortable, and was replaced by Martin Brittain. Brittain immediately took up his regular position on the right side of midfield, with Milner going up front.

Given had to make save to tip away a shot from Kiska, and when the corner came in Adam fired over from 15 yards.

N'Zogbia showed neat skill on 62 minutes to weave into the box from the left side, but his cross-cum-shot flashed across the face of goal, then in the next attack Brittain's cross was just too high for Shearer.

Bowyer had a shot tipped away by the goalkeeper after good work from Babayaro and N'Zogbia, and when Milner swung the corner in Shearer headed the ball home for his 193rd United goal.

Brittain then set up Bowyer for a shot from distance but Pernis was equal to it as The Magpies pressed for another goal.

Shearer should have had a penalty when he was shoved opver by Zimen, but neither the referee or his assistant felt it was a foul and allowed play to continue.

Dubnica substitute clipped an effrort just wide of the target in their next attack, then at the other end Shearer was stopped in his tracks by the linesman's flag when Milner threaded a pass through to him.

Boumsong got in the way of a shot from Novak six minutes from the end, then Augustini headed straight at Given after a cross from the right in the next attack.

Shearer was denied a second goal on 86 minutes when his header from Brittain's cross came back off the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.

Shearer then N'Zogbia both saw half chances go begging in the closing stages, and as the game went into two minutes of time added on Shearer powered in another header, this time from Carr's cross, to complete a 5-1 aggregate victory.
