The young Magpies, who have picked up just one point from their opening five games, were trailing within the opening three minutes as Danny Ward headed home from close range.
And it was Ward who doubled the advantage as his low shot found the net in the 37th minute.
Things got worse for the black and whites right on half-time as Nathan Woolfe fired home from 12 yards out to give the Trotters a three-goal lead going into the break.
Woolfe got his second nine minutes after the interval with a delightful curler from the edge of the area which found Mark Cook's top corner.
Alex Francis (73) got a consolation for United, volleying home from Frank Wiafe Danquah's free-kick.
