NEWCASTLE United Juniors were unable to make it three wins on the bounce as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at North East rivals Middlesbrough.

The Geordies were already trailing by two goals at the break, Gary Martin (12) turning Callum Morris inside the area before firing past Paul Farman in United's goal.

Jon Franks (22) doubled the advantage, heading home from close range after Farman had parried Martin's strike.

North Tyneside stopper Farman made a string of top drawer saves to keep the young Magpies in the game, and James Marwood (78) set-up a tense finish after converting from the spot.

Matthew Grieve almost snatched a derby point for Kenny Wharton's side, but his shot evaded the Boro post by a matter of inches.
