NEWCASTLE United Under-18s were unlucky not to get a result against table-topping Notts Forest after a spirited display at the club's Little Benton Academy.
The blustery weather made it difficult for both sides but two goals inside the opening half hour were enough to make it seven wins on the bounce for the visitors.
Max Wright opened the scoring as he was allowed time and space on the edge of the area to fire past United keeper Paul Farman after 19 minutes.
And Forest added a second just before the half hour mark, Ben Fairclough finding the Magpies net with a spectacular hooked effort after controlling with his back to goal.
Ryan Donaldson hit the post before the break and Daniel Neary and James Tavernier both went close after the interval as the hosts searched for the goal to get them back in the game.
Forest held on for the win but the young Magpies will take heart from the display ahead of their FA Youth Cup Third Round tie with Shrewsbury Town in two weeks time.
