Shay Given v Chelsea

Shay Given (24 apps) ... A longstanding groin problem limited Shay's appearance, but the Irish stopper was once again outstanding when he did play and will be hoping he can return injury-free ahead of next season.

Steve Harper

Steve Harper (21 apps) ... Harps' best season yet in black and white as he played a major role in United's survival bid, coming in for the injured Shay Given in the final 11 matches of the campaign. Conceded just once in a five-game unbeaten run which saw the Geordies climb clear of the relegation zone.

Habib Beye v Spurs

Habib Beye (30 apps, 1 goal) ... Classy Senegal star has been the pick of the summer signings and it's little surprise he has become something of a fans' favourite with his all-action endeavours down United's right flank.

Steven Taylor

Steven Taylor (36 apps, 1 goal) ... Geordie defender continues to go from strength-to-strength and enjoyed another solid year at the heart of the Magpie rearguard.

Nicky Butt

Nicky Butt (39 apps, 3 goals) ... Arguably United's most consistent performer as he once again showed his experience and leadership qualities in the Geordie engine room, even chipping in with three goals.

James Milner

James Milner (32 apps, 3 goals) ... Appeared in every league game until he suffered a foot injury at Liverpool in March. Before then Milner had continued to give everything to the black and white cause and netted the crucial equaliser in the Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light back in November.

Michael Owen scores v Sunderland

Michael Owen (33 apps, 13 goals) ... Had a fantastic second half to the season starting in each of United's final 20 games. Enjoyed a scoring streak of six in as many matches as the Geordies buried the threat of relegation, the highlight being his double in the Tyne-Wear derby last month.

Oba Martins scores v Spurs

Oba Martins (33 apps, 10 goals) ... Like strike partner Owen, Martins' goals went a long way to ensuring the Magpies' top flight status as his pace and unpredictability continued to terrify defences across the land.
