PARTIZAN Belgrade coach Lothar Matthaus is hoping to cause an upset when he goes head-to-head with Sir Bobby Robson at St. James' Park on Wednesday night.

The legendary German was part of the West Germany side that dumped England out of the World Cup semi-finals back in 1990 when Sir Bobby was at the helm, and he is hoping to get one over on the Magpies boss again in the Champions League third qualifying round second leg.

"I remember that game against England well, even though it was 13 years ago," said Matthaus, speaking exclusively to nufc.co.uk at Newcastle Airport on Tuesday.

"Bobby had a good team then, and he also has a good team now. He is an excellent manager, one of the best there is and I have a lot of respect for him.

"That was a good game against England, and we had some luck before we eventually won on the penalties. Maybe we can get some luck on Wednesday too!"

Matthaus played 30 games in the Champions League during his time with Bayern Munich, ande after tasting success as a player he is now keen to have a crack on the big stage as a manager.

But after Nobby Solano's goal gave United the advantage in the first leg, he knows his side go into Wednesday's game as underdogs.

"The game in our stadium was very good, and both sides played some good football. We had some chances near the end, but we could not score.

"Newcastle have the one goal lead now, and they will be favourites to go through because they are at home. My team will be hoping to cause a surprise, but it is tough as Newcastle are a good team.

"They have many dangers in the team. Not just Alan Shearer, but also people like Kieron Dyer."

Matthaus took in Saturday's clash with Manchester United, he is expecting a good atmosphere at St. James' Park.

"I saw the game and I was very impressed with the crowd. The football fans in England are very passionate, and in such a big stadium the noise will be very good," he added.

"It's good to be in Newcastle now, and we're all looking forward to the game."
