SIR Bobby Robson was delighted after seeing his side record their first home win of the season with a thumping 5-0 win over NAC Breda.
United travel to Holland for the second leg in mid-October, but Craig Bellamy (2), Titus Bramble, Alan Shearer and Darren Ambrose all but booked Newcastle's place in the next round.
"I'm delighted with the performance, and with respect I think we just had that little bit too much for Breda all over the park," said Sir Bobby.
"It was obviously an important win bearing in mind the start we have had. It was always going to be question of time, patience and support, and everything clicked in the game.
"We had pace in midfield, and with them having a solid line across the m,iddle we knew that was important. We got around tehm and caused them problems.
"Dyer was outstadning, Bellamy's pace caused problems and he got two great goals, JJ had the legs in midfield and Laurent had another splendid game.
"But don't forget Shay Given's contribution, because he made two fantastic saves in the first half and had it not been for those saves we could have come in 2-2 at the break.
"It was a much-needed victory, and it won't do us any harm ahead of the game at Arsenal in two days time.
"I didn't expect five, I'd have settled for two, but I told the players before the game that they had to approach this game as if it was Barcelona or Inter Milan and they did that."
