SIR Bobby Robson was a happy man after United continued their climb up the Premiership thanks to a 1-0 win against Middlesbrough at The Riverside.

Shola Ameobi's 21st minute strike was enough to win the match, though United were indebted to another solid display from the defence - and from Shay Given in particular -  for the three points.

"It wasn't a pretty performance, but I said it would be atough game against Middlesbrough as derby games are always a battle, and that's exactly how it turned out," said Sir Bobby.

"Our players played with an 'over my dead body' type of attitude, the resolution was fantastic. We did get a bit of luck at times, but we didn't get any at Arsenal a couple of weeks ago so maybe it does even itself out.

"Middlesbrough put us under a lot of pressure, particularly in the first 20 minutes, but we weathered the storm and once we got the goal through Shola we came into it a bit more.

"Middlesbrough had their chances though, and they won't lose many games - particularly here at The Riverside - if they continue to put in performances like that. I know how Steve (McClaren) must feel at this moment because he will feel his side deserved something from that game.

"Shay made two or three fantastic saves to keep them out, and Titus was once again outstanding at the back. It was a big win for us, and we're very happy with our form at the moment.

"It's going to be a gradual climb up the table, but we're in a nice little run now and hopefully we can keep that going at Fulham on Tuesday night."
