SIR Bobby Robson made one change to the side that beat Manchester City at the weekend, with Andy O'Brien replacing Jonathan Woodgate who dropped to the bench.

United, defending a 3-2 lead from the first leg, kicked off attacking the Leazes End, and Shearer was booked with just 17 seconds on the clock for a foul on Zwyssig that left the defender needing treatment.

After four minutes, Zwyssig was still feeling the effects of the challenge and had to be replaced by Smiljanic.

Basel won a corner on five minutes whenh Chipperfield's powerful 20 yard strike skimmed off O'Brien, but Yakin's inswinger was well held by Given, then after a corner on the other flank Yakin headed into the sidenetting.

United won their first corner on 10 minutes after good work from Ameobi, but Basel's defence did well to clear their lines, then three minutes later United took the lead.

Another flag kick was whipped in by Robert and Shearer rose in the six yard box with Smiljanic, and the substitute got the last touch as the ball just crossed the line with Chipperfield unable to keep it out.

Moments after taking the lead Dyer went down under a challenge from Quennoz inside the penalty area, but the Danish official wasn't interested in awarding a spot kick.

United were enjoying most of the play as the first period passed the half way stage, and Speed saw a shot saved by Zuberbuhler on 24 minutes after a break down the left.

A minute later Canteluppi clearly dived when challenged by Given when he tried to get on the end of Strellar's flick, and the referee showed him a yellow card.

Dyer was thwarted by a tackle from Quennoz on the edge opf the box after a great run from deep inside his own half as United pressed for a second goal, then Zuberbuhler made a one handed save to keep out Shearer's powerful effort just before the half hour.

Hughes headed Chipperfield's cross out for a corner on the left hand side on 31 minutes, but Speed easily cleared the danger, then moments later Bernard's foul on Barberis saw Basel awarded a free kick just outside of the box but Yakin's shot hit the wall.

Ameobi won another corner for the home side on 38 minutes, but again Basel cleared the danger, then at the other end Given appeared to make a save to deny Rossi but the referee awarded a goal-kick.

Four minutes before the break Given made a superb save, spreading himself on the edge of the six-yard bos to keep out Streeller's effort after the centre forward got goal-side of O'Brien.

Jenas had a low strike from distance just before the break but it was Basel who came the closest. Rossi broke down the right and after making his way into the box, laid the ball across the face to Cantaluppi at the far post, but his acute angle strike was well blocked by Given.

United started strongly after the break and after Basel survived a goalmouth scramble, Jenas had a shot from 20 yards charged down by Quennoz.

The Swiss won a free kick about five yards from the edge of the box just right of centre on 51 minutes when Bramble fouled Rossi, and Yakin was desperately unlucky with a sweet curling effort that came off Given's left hand upright.

A minute later United won a corner on the right, but when Robert swung the ball to the far post Atouba headed clear under pressure from Bramble.

Basel's fans were cheering on 57 minutes when Rossi headed the ball home from close range after a cross from the right, but the linesman's flag cut short the celebrations.

Bramble's foul on David Degan saw Basel win another free kick in a dangerous position right on the edge of the box on 67 minutes, but Yaki9n's strike hit the wall and when the ball rolled to the feet of substitute Tum the striker blazed over from a tight angle.

When play switched to the other end a flowing move involving jenas, Dyer and Ameobi saw the striker thread the ball through to Shearer but it had too much pace on it and rolled out for a goal-kick, then Jenas's sidefooted effort rolled wide as he tried to find the bottom corner.

Degen forced another smart save from Given on 74 minutes, and as the game went into the final 15 minutes Basel were still pushing forward in a bid to salvage something from the game.

On 79 minutes, United made a double change witrh Solano and Ambrose replacing Dyer and Robert.

The replacements almost had an immediate impact when Solano clipped the ball in with the outside of his foot from the right side of the box, and when Ambrose and Degan challenged on the far post the ball broke to Shearer but the goalkeeper made a superb block.

Another cross from Solano a minute later saw Ameobi win the ball in the air and knock it into the feet of Shearer but again the goalkeeper Zuberbuhler made the block.

Solano won a free kick right on the edge of the right hand side of the box on 85 minutes when he was felled by Atouba, and when the Peruvian clipped the ball in Shearer headed over the crossbar.

The fourthy official addede on two minutes at the end, but United kept it tight at the back to cement their place in the next round and go through 4-2 on aggregate.
