SIR Bobby Robson made three changes to the side that beat FC basel on Thursday for the lunchtime clash with Wolves at Molineux.
As expected, Jonathan Woodgate came back into the heart of defence in place of the banned Andy O'Brien, while Lee Bowyer replaced Laurent Robert and Shola Ameobi dropped to the bench as Lomana LuaLua was handed a rare start.
Wolves included three former Sunderland players in their starting line-up - Paul Butler, Alex Rae and Jody Craddock.

Wolves won the first corner of the game on five minutes, and when the ball was only half cleared the home side won another flag kick when the ball was deflected away from Camara as he tried to get on the end of Andrews' cross.
Woodgate did well to track back the pacy Camara as the striker ran through from midfield, but the corner that followed was easily dealt with, then Bramble headed clear Andrews' cross with Blake lurking in the six yard box.
Shearer was desperately unlucky not to give United the lead on 15 minutes when his acrobatic volley came back off the bar after good work from LuaLua and then Hughes on the right.
Naylor's foul on Dyer saw United awarded a free kick on the right wing on 21 minutes, and when Bowyer whipped the ball in Bramble glanced a header wide after ghosting in at the back post.
Craddock then hooked a shot over the bar from the edge of the box on 24 minutes after Rae lofted a free kick from midfield, then two minutes later Wolves took the lead.
Given came racing out of his goal to clear from
Blake despite Woodgate being well positioned to clear, and when the goalkeeper missed his kick the striker had time to take a touch and pick his spot with Hughes on the line.
A minute later Butler was booked for handball as LuaLua tried to skip past him in search of a quick leveller, but the free kick was well caught by Oakes in the home goal.
Given made a good save at the feet of Camara on 30 minutes when Kennedy whipped the ball in low from the left, and when play switched to the other end United got back on level terms.
LuaLua threaded a good ball into the path of
Shearer, and the skipper fired the ball across Oakes into the bottom corner.
Bernard's foul on Irwin earned him a caution on 32 minutes, and when the veteran defender took the set piece Butler's diving header went wide of Given's right hand upright.
United had a lucky escape on 42 minutes when Blake went down after being clipped by Bramble just outside of the area, but with the referee looking to his assistant for help the linesman didn't react and play continued - much to the annoyance of the home crowd.
Moments later Gudjohnsen found himself clean through goal after Speed lost possession, but with the whole goal to aim at he shot wide and the score remained all square at the interval.
Five minutes into the second half Butler sliced Bowyer's left wing cross in front of his own goal but no-one could capitalise, then a free kick from Jenas was headed away by Craddock as Newcastle pressed.
Given made a good block to deny Gudjohnsen on 55 minutes after good work from Blake on the left, then Dyer needed treatment after going down in a heap in midfield following a collision but was eventually able to continue.
Dyer was quickly back in the thick of the action, and Oakes had to race from his goal to punch clear as the midfielder tried to get on the end of a pass from Speed.
Oakes then gathered the ball at the second attempt as LuaLua slid the ball across goal on the hour mark, then United won a corner a minute later when Naylor made a mess of a backpass but Butler headed away.
Camara had a shot deflected off Woodgate on 70 minutes, and when the ball was played back in Blake headed over the bar, then at the other end Speed had a shot that hit Butler after some LuaLua trickery inside the box.
Wolves made a change on 76 minutes when Kennedy was replaced by Kenny Miller, then two minutes later Solano and Ameobi replaced Bowyer and LuaLua.
Solano's first job was to take a long range free kick after Speed had been fouled, but his curling effort was easy for Oakes.
Wolves won a free kick 25 yards out on 81 minutes when Blake was fouled, but Gudjohnsen's rocket smacked off the post and went for a goal-kick.
Bernard's inswinging cross on 84 minutes was directed behind by the hand of former Blackcat Jody Craddock but referee Bennett missed it and what seemed a certain penalty was denied as Wolves were allowed to eventually clear their lines.
There were some tired legs in the United team going into the last five minutes with many of the side having played just 36 hours earlier, and they were relieved to see Camara's header come back off the bar as the game went into time added on.
Hughes did well to get a cross in from the right in the last minute of injury time, but Ameobi couldn't divert his header on target as United took a point.
