SIR Bobby Robson said he was "gutted" after seeing his side crash out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield.

Laurent Robert cancelled out Bruno Cheyrou's second minute goal with another superb long range effort, but The Magpies were out of sorts in the second half and Cheyrou's second goal booked Liverpool's place in the next round.

"I'm gutted and the players are gutted because we believed we had a chance of progressing," said Sir Bobby.

"I wasn't happy with their first goal because we really allowed them to walk it in, but we didn't let them settle and Laurent got us back in the game a couple of minutes later.

"It was nip and tuck for the rest of the half, but it was a different story after that. They must have had 60 per cent of the possession, and they made us defend corners and kept pressing us.

"From our point of view, we didn't get behind them, espcially down the wings. My wingers didn't get behind their full backs and get the crosses in, and as a result Alan Shearer was starved of chances.

"Alan had that chance in the last minute of the game when he turned and shot, and the goalkeeper has made the save of the game to deny us a replay.

"We're disappointed, that goes without saying, and we'll have to get back together and get over that disappointment next weekend."
