Graeme Souness rested Alan Shearer, but gave Craig Moore and Francesco Coco a start, while Jermaine Jenas also started despite all the speculation over his future. Kieron Dyer also started his first game of the summer after shaking off a hamstring problem.

And Dyer almost gave United the lead with just 10 seconds gone when Ameobi threaded a pass through to him, but Saroya got a block in before Dyer could shoot.

Ameobi then had a cross blocked by Leach after a neat turn on Protain, then on nine minutes Emre saw a low strike easily saved by Preddie.

Yeading's first attempt on goal came on 12 minutes when Wales crossed from the right, but Protain's header was well wide of the target.

Ameobi saw an eight-yard drive crash off the the inside of the post from Bowyer's pass on 14 minutes, then moments later Yeading were happy to clear their lines after a well-worked free kick from The Magpies.

There were few clear cut chances at either end as the first period passed the half hour mark, with Yeading getting plenty of men behind the ball every time United pressed forward.

Bowyer dragged a shot wide from 25 yards on 34 minutes after breaking through from midfield, then five minutes before the break Jenas blasted a shot from from similar distance over the crossbar and into the Leazes End.

On 42 minutes United finally got the breakthrough. Wales needlessly gave away a corner with a sloppy pass, and when Emre swung the ball in, Moore was left unmarked to glance a header into the back of the net.

Emre then threaded a ball through to Ameobi but his effort was blocked by the legs of Preddie, and this time the corner was cleared.

Steven Taylor came on for Boumsong at the start of the second half, and James Milner replaced Scott Parker in midfield. The attendance was announed as 6,151 at the interval.

Two corners in quick succession at the start of the second period were both cleared by Yeading, then Ameobi stabbed a low cross from Carr over the crossbar on 53 minutes.

On 57 minutes newcastle made another change, with Lee Bowyer being replaced by Charles N'Zogbia.

Yeading had the ball in the net through Morgan on 64 minutes, but the linesman's flag cut short the celebrations as Brown was in an offside position.

Coco was replaced by Ramage on 68 minutes.

Yeading substitute Bernard saw a shot roll just wide of the far post on 72 minutes after skipping past Moore down the inside right channel, then at the other end a clever header from Dyer landed on top of the net after a good cross from Milner.

On 79 minutes Milner made it 2-0 with a neat turn and shot from Dyer's pass.

Milner should have made it 3-0 moments later after another good ball from Dyer, but he couldn't keep his angled drive down and the chance went begging.

With 10 minutes left, Harper came off to be replaced by Tony Caig.

Emre made it 3-0 on 83 minutes, picking up a pass from Dyer before coolly lifting the ball over Yeading's replacement goalkeeper Luke Blackmore.

Blackmore made a good save to keep out an 85th minute effort from Dyer. Two minutes later Dyer was replaced by Michael Chopra then Emre was replaced by Amdy Faye.

Three minutes of time were added on at the end, and Ameobi netted with a rasping strike from the edge of the box that left Blackmore with no chance.

From the next attack, Ameobi swept the ball in again from Milner's cross to make it 5-0.
