MATCH REPORT
NEWCASTLE United booked their place in the qualifying stage of the UEFA Cup with a comfortable win against Lillestrom on Saturday.
Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at St. James' Park, Glenn Roeder knew his side had to win the game to progress, and he will have been delighted to have seen his side put on a professional display to go through.
Shola Ameobi was the hero in the first half, sidefooting home the first goal on 29 minutes after home goalkeeper Otto Fredrikson palmed out a powerful low drive from Charles N'Zogbia.
The striker then bundled home the second goal from close range after a cross from the right from Scott Parker, and Emre wrapped up the game in the last minute with a long range strike that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+2 Parker almost made it 4-0, but Fredrikson made the block and Lillestrom cleared.
90m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-3) Emre made it 3-0 with a great strike from distance, firing home after Solano sent Taylor away to tee up the Turkey midfielder.
87m Emre dragged a low shot well wide after a good move down the right flank.
86m Goalkeeper Fredrikson made a meal of saving from Parker, conceding a corner, but the set piece came to nothing. Prior to the flag kick being taken, Matty Pattison replaced Charles N'Zogbia
83m Solano fired wide from 22 yards after a good passing move involving Butt, Emre and Taylor.
79m Two-goal hero Shola Ameobi was replaced by Nicky Butt. That left N'Zogbia and Emre in attack for the last 10 minutes of the game.
74m Riise took a good touch 25 yards out and fired low, but his strike rolled wide of the upright. At this point Lillestrom were still down to 10 men, with Sundgot still getting attention from the physiotherapist behind the goal. When he finally got to his feet, it was clear he would play no further part in the action and he hobbled off down the tunnel.
69m Glenn Roeder made his first change of the afternoon, with Craig Moore coming on for Babayaro. Moore slotted in at centre back, with Taylor moving to right back and Carr slotting in at left back.
65m Sundgot limped off for treatment for what appeared to be an ankle injury, leaving the home side temporarily down to 10 men
64m Sundgot was in the thick of the action again, rising to get on the end of Wehrman's free kick from deep in midfield, but his header bounced wide of Given's left hand post.
62m The home side had claims for a spot kick turned down after a quick throw in fell at the feet of Sundgot, but the referee saw nothing wrong with Babayaro's challenge and play continued.
61m Emre had another corner cleared as the Magpies pressed for a third goal.
60m Lillestrom made their third and final change, with Mifsud - so impressive in the first game but anonymous this afternoon - making way for Arild Sundgot.
59m Parker's challenge on Lillestrom's playmaker Koren earned him the first booking of the game. Strand took the free kick that followed, but the defensive wall did the job and the ball was cleared.
57m N'Zogbia's good work on the left flank resulted in Newcastle winning a corner, and when Emre swung the ball in after a short routine with Milner the goalkeeper did well to fist the ball away.
55m Wehrman's aerial challenge on Babayaro left the full back requiring treatment, but he was able to continue after some attention.
54m Strand tried his luck from distance, but his effort was easy for Given.
53m Riise's ball in from the wide right position flashed diagonally across goal and beyond the stretch of Mifsud as Lillestrom tried to find a way back into the game.
50m Carr got ahead of Strand to poke the ball out for a corner, but Koren's outswinger was overhit and United regained possession with a goal kick.
48m Solano almost made it 3-0 in the opening exchanges of the second half with a shot from an acute angle after a cross from N'Zogbia, but Fredrikson got a palm on the ball and the hosts cleared.
46m Lillestrom coach Uwe Rosler made a double switch at the start of the second period, with Pal Strand and Kasey Wehrman replacing Sogard and Mouelhi.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45m As the half drew to a close, United were well on top in terms of possession and Lilelstrom's heads were down as they trooped off at the interval.
36m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-2) Ameobi was on target again, making a good run into the middle to get on the end of Parker's cross from inside the six-yard box to poke the ball over the line and give the visitors a commanding lead in the tie. Shola's second goal of the afternoon lifted him above Craig Bellamy into second spot in the all-time European goals chart, with Alan Shearer on top with 30.
35m Milner's cross from the left was headed out by Stefanutto as far as Emre 16 yards out, but the Turk's low effort rolled wide of Fredrikson's right-hand upright.
34m A through ball from N'Zogbia down the inside right channel sent Ameobi away, but when he played the ball across the face of goal there was no blue shirt anywhere near to get a decisive touch with the goal gaping.
29m NEWCASTLE GOAL (0-1) A foul by Sogard on Emre gave United a free kick 30 yards out. Splano backheeled the ball into the path of N'Zogbia, and when his low drive was pushed out by Fredrikson, Ameobi reacted quickest to sidefoot home the rebound for his 11th European goal and put United into a 2-1 aggregate lead.
23m Mouelhi's deep ball into the box is met by Occean, but his header is well off target.
15m A short back-pass from Winsnes saw Milner charge down the goalkeeper and win a corner on the left. Emre whipped the ball in and Ameobi rose well to get on the end of it, but his powerful header flew just over the corssbar.
9m United got the first corner of the game when Winsnes saw Solano's cross diverted off him, but the flag kick came to nothing as Lillestrom cleared their lines.
8m Stefanutto's foul from behind on Solano gave Newcastle a free kick 30 yards out just to the right of centre, but Emre's set-piece was poor and didn't clear the defensive wall.
5m As United started to take shape, it was obvious that Emre was playing off the shoulder of Ameobi, with Milner wide on the left and N'Zogbia tucked inside.
3m A high ball into the box from Mifsud after good work from Koren found his strike partner Occean, but his header was well off target.
2m A foul on Milner by Winsnes gave Newcastle a free kick wide on the left. Emre swung the ball in and Taylor headded goalwards, and when the ball was cleared as far as Milner he fired wide from the edge of the box.
1m There were around 1,000 Magpies fans behind the goal when the game got underway, with the loyal band of regular Tyneside travellers joined by a fair number of Scandinavian-based Magpie fans. The Lillestrom fans were out in force as well, making a tremendous atmosphere in the 12,000-seater Arasen Stadium.
TEAM NEWS The home side got the game started attacking the traveling fans.
MAGPIES boss Glenn Roeder made one change to the side that drew 1-1 with Lillestrom at St. James' Park last week for today's second leg in the Arasen Stadium.
Albert Luque, Newcastle's goalscorer last week, was suffering with blisters so he was ruled out, with Shola Ameobi replacing him in attack.
Craig Moore, who was given extra time off by Roeder following his World Cup commitments, was among the substitutes.
Lillestrom coach Uwe Rosler made two changes to the team he sent out on Tyneside, with Pal Steffen Andresen replaced by Frode Kippe, and goalkeeper Heinz Muller replaced by Otto Fredrikson after the regular stopper picked up a knock in training.
Johan Petter Winsnes, who was forced out of the first leg just a minute into the game after being caught with a high boot from Charles N'Zogbia, started the match sporting a bandage.
