MATCH REPORT
A LATE fightback from the Magpies wasn't enough to beat PSV Eindhoven in an entertaining pre-season clash at St. James' Park.
The Dutch champions took the lead on 16 minutes when Jefferson Farfan poked the ball home from close range, and shortly before half time Jan Venegoor of Hesselink doubled the lead.
Four minutes after the break Jason Culina made it 3-0, but Shola Ameobi pulled one back and a penalty from Albert Luque further reduced the deficit.
Newcastle piled forward in the closing stages, but PSV held on for the victory.
SECOND HALF UPDATES
90+2 O'Brien's ball into the box caused a nervy moment for PSV, then seconds later Lamey had to hook the ball away after Luque clipped the ball across the face of goal. Milner then fired wide before the referee blew to end an entertaining game.
90m With a minute remaining, United's young Dutch goalkeeper Tim Krul was given the briefest of run-outs against his fellow countrymen when he came off the bench in place of Shay Given for his first taste of senior action.
88m Ismail Aissati tried his luck from the edge of the box, but Given made an easy save. Newcastle then made a change, with the hard-working Ameobi replaced by Alan O'Brien.
82m Lamey had to head away another teasing centre from Milner as the Magpies poured forward in search of an equaliser.
80m Carr picked up a booking when he scythed down Beerens as the substitute tried to break past him on the left.
78m Parker's 25 yard drive was blocked by Alex, then when PSV broke they won a right wing corner that was headed out for a second flag kick, which Moore nodded away.
75m Carr saw a long-range drive fly wide as United looked to get back on level terms.
73m PSV made three changes before the game restarted, with Beerens, Smit and Feher coming on for Farfan, Varynen and Kone.
72m NEWCASTLE GOAL (2-3)Moore's long ball over the top found Ameobi, and when Eric Addo slid in, the referee awarded a penalty. Albert Luque stepped up to take the spot kick, and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it 3-2.
70m Bramble surged forward again and played the ball out to Ameobi, but when the striker crossed the ball back in the powerful centre back couldn't direct his header on target.
69m Carlos Salcido got the first yellow card of the afternoon after a late challenge on Milner.
68m NEWCASTLE GOAL (1-3) Luque saw half-hearted appeals for a penalty waved away when he tumbled under a challenge from Simons, but moments later United pulled one back when Milner's cross from the right was headed home by Shola Ameobi to reduce the deficit.
67m Moore's long ball found its way through to Ameobi, and he tried his luck from a tight angle forcing the goalkeeper to save at his near post and concede a corner. The ball was half cleared as far as Carr, but his effort from distance flew high and wide.
63m Bramble made a surging run from midfield before being tripped by Lamey on the left hand corner of the penalty area. Milner's low ball in was gathered by Moens.
60m Newcastle made a triple change on the hour mark, with Milner, Luque and Butt coming on in place of Solano, Duff and Emre.
57m Solano's ball down the channel saw Carr get ahead of Salcido and cross, but Moens got down to collect.
54m Duff cut inside after a break down the right, but Salcido made a good challenge, then when the visitors broke quickly, Parker did well to deny Kone with a great challenge inside the box.
53m Ameobi played a good ball into Emre, and when he went round the goalkeeper and shot, Simons made the block to prevent the goal and concede a corner. Bramble won another flag kick when Solano whipped the ball in, but this time Alex rose well to head clear.
51m Solano's ball to Duff saw the debutant wriggle past Simons and get a shot away, but his effort was off target.
49m PSV EINDHOVEN GOAL (0-3) Kone broke into the box down the inside left channel, and he pulled the ball back into the path of Jason Culina who drilled the ball into the net.
48m Emre sprayed the ball out to Solano, and his diagonal ball dropped to Duff whose angled volley flashed wide of the near post.
47m Stephen Carr's low cross from the right was gathered at the foot of his near post by Moens.
46m There were a host of substitutions at the start of the second half, with both sides making changes. Craig Moore came off the bench for Taylor, while the visitors threw on Salcido, Alex, Culina, Addo and Aissati for Ball, Da Costa, Cocu and Ooijer.
FIRST HALF UPDATES
45m Taylor's firm but fair challenge on Kone stopped the striker in his tracks as he tried to plough his way through the heart of the United defence, and he needed treatment as the referee brought the first half to an end with PSV in control.
44m Da Costa's trip on N'Zogbia gave Newcastle a free kick right on the edge of the box, and when Solano clipped the ball into the path of Duff his powerful drive hit the wall and the Dutchmen cleared.
41m PSV EINDHOVEN GOAL (0-2) Four minutes before the interval Michael Lamey was allowed time and space to get in a cross from the right, and Jan Venegoor of Hesselink ghosted in to fire past Given and give the visitors a two-goal cushion.
40m Duff was looking more and more lively as the half progressed, and his clever ball out wide to Carr after good work from N'Zogbia saw the full back swing in a cross, but Ball headed away.
38m Ameobi's foul on Da Costa gave the visitors a free kick inside their own box after more good work from Duff, this time on the right wing.
36m Solano laid a free kick off to N'Zogbia, but when he fired the ball low into the danger area an offside flag brought the attack to a halt.
35m Duff did well to tease Lamey on the left before creating space for a low cross, and Simons had to slide in to boot the ball to safety with several black and white shirts waiting to pounce.
28m A turn of pace from Kone down the left flank left Taylor for dead, and he whipped in a low cross that flashed just past Farfan and Ramage turned the ball out for a flag kick. Farfan fired the corner in, but Parker was well positioned on the front post to nod the ball out. A second corner quickly followed, but this time Cocu's header was straight at Given.
23m Emre's long ball over the top after some tenacious tackling from Parker found Duff, and he cut inside before being felled by Simons on the left corner of the box. Solano curled the free kick in, but his effort clipped the top of the bar and went for a goal kick.
18m United tried to find a quick reponse, and Duff's low cross from the left just eluded Ameobi and Simons was happy to put the ball out for a corner. Solano swung the ball in from the right, but Oscar Moens was able to gather the cross above his head.
16m PSV EINDHOVEN GOAL (0-1) Given pulled off a great save to get down low to keep out a shot from Vayrynen, but Venegoor of Hesselink's pounced on the loose ball and his low cross was diverted by Taylor into the path of Jefferson Farfan who drilled the ball home from close range.
15m Bramble's challenge on Varynen was deemed illegal by referee Mark Clattenburg, and when the free kick was played in to Venegoor of Hesselink his miscued drive fell at the feet of Vayrynen who shot over from 25 yards.
14m Ooijer played the ball out wide to Lamey, and he cut inside before having a shot that Taylor blocked.
13m Solano's cross for Ameobi was headed out by Ooijer as far as Emre on the edge of the penalty area, and his first time effort was blocked by Vayrynen.
11m A clearing header from Taylor fell to Farfan 30 yards out, but his intended pass to Kone was overhit and Given collected.
8m Duff put a through ball into the path of Ameobi, but Ooijer was alert enough to make the challenge as PSV regained possession.
6m Ball did well to get ahead of Solano to clear the danger after N'Zogbia fired in a low cross from the left.
5m Parker laid the ball into the path of Emre, and the Turk took a touch before drilling in a shot that hit Da Costa on the edge of the box.
3m Emre tried to advance into a shooting position after good work from Ramage and Duff on the left flank, but Simons dispossessed him.
1m The game got underway with the visitors attacking the Gallowgate End, and Duff - operating in an advanced role off the shoulder of Ameobi - won a free kick inside the opening few seconds when he was pushed over by Vayrynen.
