Seasoned International defender cum midfielder Geremi (full name Geremi Sorele Njitap Fotso) was Sam Allardyce's fourth signing as manager of Newcastle United on 3 July 2007, signing a three-year-deal at St. James' Park, joining on a free transfer from Chelsea.

A veteran of the Cameroon national team, the versatile Geremi played in his homeland for Racing Bafoussam and South America (Cerro Porteno in Paraguay) before moving to European club football in 1997 at the age of 18.

A stylish player, he spent two seasons in Turkey with Genclerberligi, racking up 57 appearances, before a dream move to Real Madrid materialised for the likeable African. In his three years at the Bernabeu, the athletic Geremi won two Champions League winners medals with the Spanish giants.

Seeking more regular football, he moved to Middlesbrough for the 2002/03 season on a year's loan from Madrid where he enjoyed a very successful season, even scoring the winner against United at the Riverside in March 2003.

After an impressive Confederations Cup campaign with Cameroon, Chelsea paid Real Madrid £6.9m for him in July 2003 and he went on to have an excellent first season at Stamford Bridge.

Capable of filling any position in midfield, or at right back, he is also a threat with deadball kicks.

On the International front, Geremi won Olympic Gold with Cameroon in Sydney in 2000 and also two African Cup of Nations titles in 2000 and 2002 as the Indomitable Lions demonstrated their superiority not only in Africa but at world level too. He also played in all three of Cameroon's World Cup Final games in 2002 and scored a wonderful free-kick in a 2-2 friendly draw with England shortly before the tournament. Won a runners-up medal in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

After making 22 starting appearances at the Bridge during 2006/07, Geremi moves to St. James' Park full of optimism for a successful 2007/08 campaign. Named skipper of the Magpies at start of 2007/08 season but relinquished that role when the Africa Cup of Nations began in January 2008.
