N'Zogbia signed for United on 2 September 2004 after FIFA's Players' Status Department confirmed to Newcastle United, through the Football Association, his right to an international transfer from Le Havre, the French Second Division Club, with United paying compensation to the French Club.

Le Havre had claimed N'Zogbia must stay with them as an apprentice for two years, under French Federation regulations, but United successfully argued against their stance. N'Zogbia, 18, didn't play any senior games for Le Havre but is a French youth international.

He impressed during a pre-season trial with the Magpies operating principally down the left side of the field in both defensive and midfield positions. Made his competitive bow for United in the Reserves at Wolverhampton on 7 September and his Premiership debut as a last minute substitute in the 3 - 0 win over Blackburn on 11 September 2004.

He is rated as one of the brightest prospects in France and he is on his way to fulfilling his potential on Tyneside after cementing himself a place in the first team during the last six weeks of the 2004/05 season.

Notched his first United goal in the Intertoto Cup win at Dubnica in July 2005 and went on to net six times that season.

A knee injury suffered at Chelsea in December 2006 hindered his progress in 2006/07 but Charles enjoyed a great start to the 2007/08 campaign which coincided with him signing a new five-year contract.

He passed the 100 game milestone for United in September 2007 and the rediscovery of his best form saw him capped at France U21 level for the first time.
