Shearer's Bar is toasting more success after picking up two prizes at the Best Bar None 2008 awards.

Shearer's Bar, named after Newcastle United's greatest goal scorer Alan Shearer, took the silver runners up prize for Best Bar as well as taking the customer vote after being voted top bar by the public in an on-line poll.

The double win follows up the two awards Shearer's Bar lifted in 2007 - the gold Best Bar prize and Best Overall prize.

Best Bar None was launched by Safe Newcastle and Northumbria Police in 2005 and recognizes those bars and clubs in the region which promote responsible drinking and provide a safe and enjoyable environment for drinkers.

Venues are measured against a list of stringent policies and procedures including crime prevention, drugs awareness, staff training procedures and public safety initiatives.

Chris Reed, Manager of Shearer's Bar, said: "Winning the top awards last year was great news so to be rewarded again not only by the judges but in the public vote was very exciting.

"All Shearer's Bar staff are fully aware of the importance of providing a non-intrusive safe customer environment so they will be equally thrilled at this latest win."

Over 60 bars, pubs and clubs in the Newcastle area took part in this year's Best Bar None awards which were held this week at the Marriott Hotel in Newcastle.
